HEAVY CIVIL SERVICES

Access Road Construction & Maintenance in Halifax & Nova Scotia

G&R Kelly provides access road construction for developers, utilities, businesses and rural landowners who need dependable, year-round entry to a site. From a temporary road into a busy job site to a permanent gravel road through a new subdivision, our crews handle road construction in Halifax and across Nova Scotia from planning to final grade. We’ve been building and maintaining roads from our Bedford base since 1969.

WHAT WE BUILD

Access Road Construction Services for Every Type of Site

Every access road has a job, and that job decides how it’s built. Our road construction services cover subdivision roads that must meet municipal standards before handover, utility and telecom tower access to substations and remote equipment sites, and haul road construction for quarries and earthmoving projects that carry heavy, repeated loads.

We also build private roads to rural homes, cottages and building lots, as well as heavy equipment access for cranes, drill rigs and concrete trucks on commercial sites.

Permanent Gravel Road Construction

Most access roads in Nova Scotia are gravel. Built properly, gravel road construction gives you a durable, load-bearing surface at a fraction of the cost of paving, and the road can be upgraded to asphalt later if traffic grows.

Temporary Access Roads & Construction Entrances

A temporary access road gets equipment and materials onto a site safely while work is underway. We build each construction access road and temporary construction entrance to keep mud off public streets and protect the ground beneath, then remove or restore it afterward.

OUR PROCESS

How We Build an Access Road That Lasts

Roads rarely fail at the surface. They fail underneath, from soft subgrade, a thin base or water with nowhere to go. That’s why our access road construction process focuses on what you can’t see.

1. Survey and Road Alignment

We walk the route and set a road alignment that suits the terrain, keeps grades manageable, leaves truck turning room and avoids wetlands where possible.

2. Clearing and Grubbing

Trees, stumps, roots and organic topsoil are removed across the full road width. Organic material left under a road breaks down over time and causes settling.

3. Cut and Fill and Subgrade Preparation

Using cut and fill, we shape the corridor to grade, break out ledge rock where needed and compact the subgrade so it can carry the design load.

4. Geotextile Fabric and Gravel Base

On softer soils, we lay geotextile fabric to keep the subgrade and road base from mixing. Layers of aggregate and crushed stone are then placed and compacted with a vibratory roller.

5. Drainage and Road Surface

We finish with road crowning so water sheds to the shoulders, plus ditches and cross culverts to carry it away. Sound drainage design is the biggest factor in how long a road lasts, and it ties directly into our culvert installation and drainage work. The finished surface can stay gravel or be prepared for paving.

MAINTENANCE & REPAIR

Gravel Road Maintenance & Repair

Even a well-built road needs care. Traffic, heavy rain and the spring thaw push gravel to the edges, flatten the crown and clog ditches. Our gravel road maintenance and gravel road repair services include:

  • Road grading services and re-crowning to restore a smooth, well-drained surface
  • Grading and levelling to remove potholes, ruts and washboarding
  • Ditch cleaning and culvert cleaning to keep water moving off the road
  • Washout repair and fresh gravel where the base has broken down

We provide private road maintenance for homeowners, shared driveways and road associations, along with scheduled maintenance for commercial and utility sites.

APPROVALS & STANDARDS

Permits, Environment & Municipal Standards

Road work in Nova Scotia often needs approvals before the first excavator arrives. Crossing a stream or wetland can require a watercourse alteration approval from Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change, and subdivision roads intended for the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) to take over must be built to municipal standards. We plan erosion and sediment control measures from day one, so stormwater runoff doesn’t carry silt off site or into nearby waterways.

WHY G&R KELLY

Why Property Owners and Developers Choose G&R Kelly

G&R Kelly has been a family-owned heavy civil contractor in Halifax since 1969. We’ve completed projects for HRM, Nova Scotia Power, local businesses and private landowners, and we’re members of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia.

Our own excavators, dump trucks and compaction equipment mean your schedule never depends on rentals. One crew handles clearing, earthworks, drainage and gravel, so nothing falls between trades, and we understand what municipal and utility clients expect at handover. From our Bedford base, we mobilize quickly across HRM and beyond.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Access Roads

What is an access road?

An access road is built to reach a specific site, such as a building lot, construction site, tower or utility station, rather than to carry public traffic. Most are gravel and privately owned.

How much does it cost to build a gravel road?

Cost depends on length, width, terrain, soil conditions, how much rock needs breaking, drainage needs and the loads the road must carry. We provide a detailed quote after a site visit, so you know exactly what’s included.

How long does it take to build a road?

A short private road can take a few days. Longer roads involving clearing, rock work or environmental approvals can take several weeks. Weather and permit timelines are the main variables.

How often should a gravel road be graded?

Most gravel roads benefit from grading once or twice a year, typically after the spring thaw and again before winter. Roads with heavy truck traffic may need it more often.
